JYVASKYLA, Finland – Over the first two days of the World Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships, Team USA set three world records en route to a total of 12 medals. Competition continues Thursday and runs through Sunday from Central Finland.
Phil Rascker, Robert Lida and Bill Collins all picked up where they left off at the USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in March as each set world records for the second consecutive competition at the World Indoor Championships. Raschker (W65) set a world record in the pentathlon with a new mark of 4713 while Lida (M75) and Collins (M60) each set world marks in the 60m with times of 8.56 and 7.59, respectively.
Raschker initially set the world record in the pentathlon at the USA Indoor Championships while Collins did the same in the 60m and Lida set the world mark in the 400m.
The gold medals from Raschker, Lida and Collins were three of a total of five gold medals for the U.S. through the first portion of the meet. Also mining gold was Lorraine Jasper (W50) in the 800m with a time of 2:28.31 and Ed Burke (M70) in the weight throw with a mark of 19.48m/63-11.
The U.S. also picked up five silver medals and a pair of bronze medals. Winning silver medals were: Rita Hanscom (W55) in the pentathlon with a score of 3933; Rachel Guest (W35) in the pentathlon with a score of 3405; Burke (M70) in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.24m/168-1; Jeferson Souza (M35) in the pentathlon with a score of 3450 and Noel Ruebel (M55) also won silver in the pentathlon with a score of 3871.
Carla Hoppie (W55) won a bronze medal in the pentathlon with a score of 3243 and Coreen Steinbach (W60) did the same in the 800m with a time of 2:51.71.
