Organizers of the Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon presented by Landfall Realty on behalf of the community confirmed today that former Olympian Zola Pieterse, better known by her maiden name Zola Budd, is registered to compete in the full marathon on Sunday, March 18.
Budd twice broke the world record in the women’s 5000 meters and twice was the women’s winner at the World Cross Country Championships. Budd also competed in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
“It’s really exciting to have an internationally known runner like Zola compete in our event,” said Tom Clifford, Race Director. “We have created a great event that is now attracting some great names in the sport which is fantastic for everyone involved.”
