LLOYD’S HARBOR, N.Y. – Joe Gray, 29, of Renton, Wash. came close to the course record held by Michael Wardian, at Caumsett Park in the 2013 USA 50K Road Championships, coming up just 15 seconds short on Sunday, March 3.

Gray, a professional runner, sponsored by Scott Sports and Mio Global, among others, finished in 2 hours, 55 minutes, 19 seconds to repeat as national champion.

“The competition was good, but wish they’d have been a little closer, to push me to break the record,” Gray said.

The Oklahoma State graduate says he will return in 2014 to try to record a three-peat title performance. Gray will make his marathon debut at this year’s Boston Marathon in April.

Shanna Ailes Istnick, 34, of Kent, Ohio, led the women’s field from start to finish in a time of 3:33:04, good enough for sixth overall to win her second consecutive national 50K title.

This was the 12th running of the Caumsett Park 50K and 8th consecutive time it has hosted the national championships.  The race was presented by Merrell of Huntington Village.

Boyd Carrington, 40, of Amityville, NY and Tina-Marie Poulin, 40, of New York, NY were the top Masters finishers in 3:28:44 and 3:56:57, respectively.

The 5K course at Caumsett Park, repeated 10 times, is an undulating circuit on the roads serving the former estate of department store mogul Marshall Field, adjacent to Long Island Sound.  The race is organized by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) and directed by Carl Grossbard and Nick Pallazzo.

Grossbard was pleased with the turnout for this year’s event, as it continues to grow.  A total of nearly 450 runners participated in the 50K and the companion 25K event on a near perfect day, with overcast skies, cool temperatures and light winds.
